This guide describes the main screens and the complete workflow of Observing Emotions. Menu names can differ slightly depending on the selected language.
The main screen shows your saved emotional-state entries for the selected date range. Each entry can contain a date and time, a value, an emotion pair, a comment and tags. The header can show the total number of records and the average value for the current view.
Open Add. Choose the date in the calendar and the time in the time picker. You can create entries for the present or for another date.
Enter a whole number from -100 to +100. A leading plus or minus sign is allowed. The app validates the range before saving. If enabled in settings, value buttons provide a quicker way to choose a value.
Select an emotion pair from the list. Add a free-form comment for context and optional comma-separated tags to make later search and statistics more useful. Press Save when the entry is complete.
Tap an existing entry to open it, edit its fields and save the changes, or delete it after confirmation.
Open Emotions to browse the localized emotion-pair catalogue. The initial catalogue is loaded for the selected language. You can create your own pair and add descriptions or colors that make sense for your personal vocabulary.
Open Expressions to browse the quotes and expressions stored for the selected language. Swipe or use the page controls to move between items.
The home screen can display a quote of the day. Your own quotes are stored locally with the rest of the app data.
Choose a start and end date from the main menu. The date range affects the main list, totals, average and graph. Use the reset action to return to the default range.
Open Graph to visualize values over the selected period. In the graph settings you can display all dates, group the view by years or group it by months. Tap or long-press a point to inspect its date, emotion and value.
Open the statistics panel from the graph. Depending on the selected data, it can show the period, record count, average value, positive/negative/neutral counts, percentage distribution, highest and lowest evaluations, zero evaluations, frequent emotions and frequent tags. Use the share action to send the displayed statistics to another app.
Open Settings or the main menu and choose Language. The supported languages are English, Russian and Latvian. On first launch the app follows a supported device language; if the device language is not supported, the interface uses English. A manually selected language remains in use until you change it.
Choose a light, dark or system-default theme. Some Android versions may recreate the current screen after a language or theme change.
Open reminder settings to enable or disable a daily local reminder, choose its time and select a sound. Android may ask for notification permission, and exact reminders may require an additional system permission. The reminder is generated locally by the device; it is not a message from a server.
Open Manage Export/Import. Choose the tables or data you want to export and select a folder through Android's file picker. Excel is useful for structured data; PDF is useful for a readable report.
Select a compatible Excel file and confirm the import. The app checks the expected schema and validates rows. If a row is invalid, the import is rolled back instead of leaving a partial update. Matching IDs update existing records according to the import rules.
A private backup creates an encrypted .oebk file. Use a password of at least eight characters and keep it separately: the app does not save or recover this password. Restoring a backup replaces local records, quotes, languages and emotion pairs, so read the confirmation carefully before proceeding.
Your diary is designed to stay on your device. The app does not require an account, does not contain advertising or behavioral analytics, and does not automatically upload diary data to the cloud. Informational pages and this guide are loaded from the Observing Emotions website when you open them.
See the Privacy Policy for details. Exported files are under your control and should be protected like any other personal document.
